What is Platelet?

Platelets are blood cells that help control bleeding. When a blood vessel is damaged, platelets collect at the site of the injury and temporarily repair the tear. Platelets then activate substances in the plasma which form a clot and wound to heal.

Who needs platelets?

Many life saving medical treatments require platelet transfusions, for example cancer patients, those receiving organ or bone marrow transplants, victims of traumatic or burn injuries and patients undergoing open heart surgery.

How frequently can someone donate platelets?

During platelets pheresis your platelet count decreases by about 20-30% which comes back to normal within 72-96 hrs. Most of the centers permit TWICE in a WEEK; however it depends upon the platelet count done by the concern centers.

How much time does it take?

Apheresis process will take approximately 1 hour. You may watch television or simply sit back and relax while helping to save a life.

How safe the Apheresis Donation is?

Each donation is closely supervised throughout the procedure by trained staff. A small percentage of platelets are collected, so there are no bleeding problems. The donation equipments are sterile and discarded after every donation.
